Study Warns Hypertension May Boost Dementia Risk
It’s estimated that 1.28 billion adults worldwide between the ages of 30-79 are living with hypertension. Left untreated, it can lead to strokes, heart attacks, and kidney and vision issues. Now, a recent study published in Hypertension Research has revealed a concerning link between high blood pressure and dementia risk, especially for middle-aged adults.
Researchers examined data from 1,279 Argentinian adults aged 21 to 95 who were participating in the Heart-Brain Study, which looks at cognitive impairment in patients with hypertension. Using a tool called Cardiovascular Risk Factors, Aging, and Incidence of Dementia (CAIDE), they assessed each participant’s dementia risk.
What they found is that 40% of participants across all age groups faced an elevated dementia risk, with a notable 28% increase in those aged 47-53. The researchers also found that older adults with lower education levels were at a heightened risk of dementia due to factors such as obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and poor blood pressure management.
Based on these findings, the researchers suggest doctors evaluate the cognitive function of patients with hypertension. They also stress the importance of detecting and managing high blood pressure early to help mitigate dementia risk.
Could Your Blood Work Predict Anxiety & Depression?
Why do some people have anxiety, depression or stress-related disorders, while others don’t? Researchers have found certain health tests may be able to predict your risk—including high blood sugar, elevated triglycerides, high blood pressure, and more.
For a study published in JAMA Network Open, researchers examined data from the Swedish Apolipoprotein-Related Mortality Risk (AMORIS) cohort. Specifically, they studied 211,200 participants aged 16 and older who undertook one or more routine health screenings during the study recruitment period and had no prior mental health disorders. Plus, each individual had at least one measurement of the biomarkers the researchers were targeting.
The researchers measured the participants’ biomarkers at the start of the study, including cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar, and more. Then, they followed up with the participants for approximately 21 years, watching them for symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress-related disorders. Throughout the study period, 16,256 participants received a diagnosis of at least one of these disorders and the average age of onset was 60.5 years.
These findings revealed a high association between high triglycerides and blood sugar levels and an increased risk of anxiety, depression, and stress-related disorders. Conversely, elevated levels of good” HDL cholesterol were correlated with a decreased risk. By spotting these biomarkers early on, doctors may be able to help patients ward off mental health issues before they develop.

Surprising Ways Caffeine Affects Your Health
Roughly 80% of adults in the US consume caffeine daily, many through their morning coffee or an afternoon cup of tea. Caffeine works by stimulating the central nervous system, boosting alertness. However, its impact extends beyond keeping you awake. Caffeine intake has been linked to a reduced risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease—yet, drinking it can also come with some concerning drawbacks. (More)
Have a Red or White Tongue? Here’s What It May Mean
Our tongues are more complex than you might think. They’re covered with small bumps, called papillae that contain taste buds, sense temperature, and create friction that helps you swallow.
